Brazil visa requirements 2026: plan your visit

Before choosing hotels and experiences, check the rules for the passport you will use, your visit purpose and your dates. This guide brings together official sources checked on 8 October 2026 and practical questions that turn entry preparation into a well-organized trip.

1. Check your passport and visit purpose

For any other passport, check with the relevant Brazilian consular post. Nationality, the document used, activities and entry history matter more than where you live.

2. If you need an eVisa, use the official portal

The official eVisa portal lists requirements. Its FAQ includes US, Canadian and Australian passports; check the current nationality selector before applying.

Use your travel passport; check fields and documents.
Track the application; after approval, download and print the PDF for boarding and arrival.

The portal recommends applying two months ahead and avoiding non-refundable bookings before issue. This does not guarantee approval timing.

3. Make a checklist for each traveler

Travel passport, full name and arrival/departure dates.
Visa or applicable exemption for the purpose and duration of the visit.
Documents requested by the portal or consulate for that person and category.
Accommodation contacts, bookings and onward-travel information when requested.
Specific documents for minors, guardians and dual nationality where applicable.

The Brazilian visa service points applicants to consular instructions and category-specific documents. This page does not prescribe one bank balance, insurance limit, photo, apostille list or passport-validity rule for every application.

4. Check passport validity without assuming one rule

UK guidance and German guidance specify six months’ validity on arrival for their respective travelers. Dutch guidance specifies validity throughout the stay and warns that carriers may impose additional requirements. Check the rule for your document and the airline or cruise line’s conditions.

Renew a passport with little remaining validity before linking visas and bookings to it. If you hold dual nationality, confirm which passport must be used at each stage.

5. Families, connections and longer stays

When traveling with minors, confirm consent and relationship documents before departure. UK guidance highlights authorization requirements, including for Brazilian dual nationals. Ask the consulate about each case.

Ask the carrier and consulate whether your connection requires entering the country, considering baggage, airport changes, domestic flights and leaving transit. Separate tickets alone do not answer the visa question.

For employment, technical work, residence, study, digital-nomad or investment plans, check the category with the Brazilian visa service before travel. Do not treat permission for a short visit as permission for employment. Permitted stay is different from visa validity, and an extension is not automatic.

6. With documents understood, shape the experience

Choose what makes the visit worthwhile for you. Which destination deserves more time? Do you want culture and dining, beach time and rest, or a visit around business meetings? Avoid building a chain of flights and transfers without time to enjoy each base.

Starting from scratch: share possible dates, interests, group size, preferred pace and fixed commitments.
Already booked: gather confirmations, timings, change conditions and the support still missing.
For an EA or family office: identify who decides, who pays and who receives updates.
For a family: include mobility, room, luggage and activity needs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Brazil on a US passport?

Current US guidance says you need a visa before travel. Check whether you already hold a valid visa or need a new application through the official route appropriate to your passport and visit.

Do the same rules apply to UK and European visitors?

No. British citizen, Dutch and German passport guidance is summarized in the table with official links. Other passports and activities need their own checks; living in the UK or Europe does not by itself determine whether you need a visa.

Can I count on fast approval or an automatic extension?

Do not plan around either assumption. Approval depends on the relevant authority and documentation. Check your permitted stay and contact the responsible authority before relying on an extension.
